Locksmiths modify keys and locks such as those found in ignitions, and as of 2015 are legally required to be licensed in certain states, says Chron. Those who simply wish to improve their skills can pursue classes at local colleges or through the Associated Locksmiths of America.
States that require a locksmith license include California, Georgia and Oregon, states Chron. As of 2015, licensure requirements include a criminal background check and license fee, according to the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. In the state of California, employees of locksmiths must also be registered with the state and undergo a background check.
