Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure for removing a kidney, according to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). It is a treatment option for kidney cancer and other kidney diseases. Kidney donors also undergo the procedure for transplantation.
In a partial nephrectomy, only the diseased portion of the kidney is removed. A radical nephrectomy involves removing the entire kidney along with the surrounding tissues. Patients requiring nephrectomy usually undergo laparoscopic surgery, which involves the use of a laparoscope to view the abdominal cavity and remove the kidney through a small incision. Possible risks of the procedure include infection, bleeding, post-operative pneumonia and allergic reaction to anesthesia, states the NKF.
