What is the ".net" framework?

The ".NET" framework is a software framework created by Microsoft to facilitate the building, deployment and running of web services and desktop applications that use ".NET" technologies. Major components of the framework include the Common Language Runtime, the Framework Class Library and the ASP.NET.

The ".NET" framework was initially released on Feb. 13, 2002, and was designed to function primarily on the Windows operating system. A computer must at least have Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 installed to use any programs that uses the framework. As of Nov. 10, 2014, the latest stable release of the framework is version 4.5.2, which was released on May 6, 2014.
