As of 2015, New Jersey is one of only 13 states that impose estate taxes at the time of death, notes The Heritage Foundation. Estate tax rates nationwide range from 9.5 percent to 20 percent, with New Jersey on par with the majority of states at 0.8 to 16 percent.
New Jersey imposes a 16-percent estate tax on estates valued at $675,000 and higher, according to The Heritage Foundation. Compared to other states still levying the estate tax, New Jersey has among the lowest threshold. New Jersey also is one of only two states that impose both an estate tax and an inheritance tax.
