What is the nickname of the state of Delaware?

The official nickname of the state of Delaware is "The First State," because it was the first state ratified by the U.S. Constitution on Dec. 7, 1787. A first grade class requested that this become the official state nickname, and it became so on May 23, 2002.

Other nicknames for the state include "The Diamond State," which was given to the state by Thomas Jefferson; the "Blue Hen State," due to the fact that Blue Hen Cocks were carried by Revolutionary War soldiers who were from Delaware; and the "Small Wonder," due to the state's small size, beauty and contributions to the country.
