What is nitrogen triiodide?
By Forinfos - 25/08/2025 - 0 comments
Nitrogen triiodide is an extremely powerful contact explosive with the formula NI3. Small quantities of dry nitrogen triiodide explode with a loud snap and are set off by a light touch or vibration. Nitrogen triiodide is created through the reaction of iodine with ammonia.
Wet NI3 is more stable than the dry compound and relatively safe to handle but requires great caution. When this compound decomposes, the iodine stains clothing and surfaces and easily causes irritation to the eyes and respiratory system. Nitrogen triiodide is soluble in organic solvents but is insoluble in inorganic solvents, such as water and ammonia.
