What is an NMFC code?

An NFMC code, which is an acronym for the National Motor Freight Classification, is a national standard that is used to compare commodities moving across different distances. These distances are typically defined as interstate, intrastate or goods moving internationally and are grouped into 18 unique classes.
The grouping is based on an evaluation of four separate characteristics of transportation, which are stowability, liability, density and handling. The NFMC is also used as a standard to determine the packing requirements for each goods category. This is done to ensure the goods are protected during transport while going through the regular handling during transportation.
