What is a normal albumin level?

According to WebMD, a normal albumin level is 3.5 to 5.0 grams per deciliter, or 35 to 50 grams per liter. This level is determined by a blood test.

An albumin blood level test is typically done to test liver and kidney function. High levels can be from dehydration, while low levels can be from serious illnesses like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, liver or kidney disease, and hyperthyroidism. Medications, chronic illness, pregnancy and infections can alter the test results. If a test result comes back out of the normal range, you may have to have a followup test done for further information.
