The normal body mass index, or BMI, range for a 16-year-old girl is between the fifth and 85th percentiles, according to WebMD Fit. Doctors use a pediatric scale to calculate a teenager's BMI, in which the measurement is a percentage comparing the teenager's BMI with others of the same age.
With the pediatric scale of BMI measurement, a 16-year-old in the 80th percentile is heavier than 80 out of 100 other girls of the same age. Doctors consider teens measuring in the fourth percentile or lower to be underweight for their age, and those scoring in the 85th percentile or higher are considered overweight, WebMD Fit explains.
