Reverend Edward Sorin, C.S.C., and seven compatriots founded The University of Notre Dame on November 26, 1842. Originally named L’Université de Notre Dame du Lac or, the University of Our Lady of the Lake, Indiana legislation officially chartered it on January 15, 1844.
In the university's early years, it attracted no more than a dozen students each year. As of April 2015, University of Notre Dame's total enrollment is 8,477 undergraduates, and the graduation rate is 96 percent. About 53 percent of students are male, and 47 percent are female. Notre Dame is in South Bend, Indiana, about 100 miles outside of Chicago on 1,250 acres of land.
