What is nucleus gracilis?

Nucleus gracilis is a nucleus located in the medulla oblongata of the brain, where the fibers of the fasciculus gracilis of the spinal cord synapse.

Nucleus cuneatus and nucleus gracilis lie in the dorsal part of the caudal medulla. These two specific nuclear groups along with their fasciculus appear as swellings on the dorsal surface of the medulla oblongata.

The axons of cells located within the nucleus cuneatus and nucleus gracilis cross as internal arcuate fibers and form what is known as the medial lemniscus. This medial lemniscus is an ascending bundle of fast-conducting myelinated axons whose cell bodies lie in the contralateral nucleus cuneatus and nucleus gracilis.
