In the United States, the number for emergency calls is 911. As a nationwide service, it gives the public quick and easy access to a Public Safety Answering Point. As of 2015, 911 service is available to approximately 96 percent of the United States, reports the National Emergency Number Association.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission oversees the provision of 911 services throughout the country. In order to improve access to emergency services, telephone service carriers and public safety entities regularly update the 911 network, according to the FCC. The FCC requires landline and wireless telephone services to provide the location and telephone number of the 911 dialer if the PSAP requests this service.
