O'Reilly Auto Parts opened for business on Dec. 2, 1957, with one store and 13 employees located at 403 Sherman street in Springfield, Missouri. In 1958, the store did $700,000 in business. The company has grown to 4,257 stores in 42 states and $6.6 billion in sales, as of 2013.
The Company founders, Charles F. O'Reilly and his son Charles H O'Reilly, grew the auto parts chain to nine stores with $7 million in annual sales in 1975 when they built their first distribution warehouse. Continued growth and successful planning led the company to go public, with an initial stock offering in 1993. It is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange as ORLY.
