Is it okay for a washer and dryer to be on the second floor?

Under the right conditions, a washer and dryer can function well on the second floor. For safety reasons, weight, noise and waterproofing must be considered.
A washer and dryer add extra weight and vibrations to second floor supports. Therefore, the floor joists must be strong enough to deal with this extra stress. Vibrations also make noise, so homeowners often consider adding soundproofing materials, such as fiberglass batts, rigid foam or spray-in insulation to limit disturbances. In addition, the laundry area must be protected from water. This often includes waterproofing the floor and installing a floor drain, an electronic shut-off valve and a trap to prevent sewer gas from entering living areas.
