According to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, anyone who wishes to purchase a firearm in Texas must be 18 years of age. Anyone under 18 years of age must have written consent from a parent or guardian.
According to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, federal law forbids individuals under the age of 18 to possess a handgun or handgun ammunition unless the gun is used for employment purposes, ranching, hunting, farming and target practice. Licensed firearm dealers may not sell handguns or handgun ammunition to individuals under the age of 21; however, individuals who are 18 or older are legally allowed to purchase shot guns or rifles, also referred to as long guns.
