How old does a child need to be to stay home alone in New Jersey?

New Jersey law does not give a specific minimum age at which children may be left home alone. However, New Jersey statute 9:6-8.21 is applicable to abuse and neglect if a child under 18 has been endangered when left home alone.

The New Jersey Department of Human Services recommends that no child under 18 be left home alone if the child cannot demonstrate responsibility, good judgment and knowledge about safety and does not have a good relationship with the parents and siblings. The National SAFE KIDS Campaign recommends that only children 12 and over be left home alone. It is also recommended that families establish good rules and provide emergency contacts.
