How old is a fifth grade student?

A student in fifth grade is generally either 10 or 11 years old. The age of a fifth grade student is determined by when his or her birthday falls and at what age he or she begins kindergarten.

Some fifth grade students are 10 years old when they enter fifth grade and turn 11 during their fifth grade year. Some students turn 10 over the summer and remain 10 throughout their fifth grade year. In some cases, a child may be younger than 10, if he or she skipped a grade, or older than 11 if he or she needed to be held back a year in a previous grade.
