The muskrat is a pond-living omnivore that is found throughout North America. Muskrats are known to eat both plants and other animals such as roots, cattails, water lilies, snails and small fish.
Muskrats are large rodents that can grow up to two feet in length, and they're covered with thick brown fur. Muskrats also have a waterproof layer of guard fur, a long flat tail up to 12 inches in length and big webbed rear feet that are well adapted for aquatic living. Muskrats prefer to live in still or slow-moving water that is several feet deep where they can swim around easily to forage for food.
