Does one need a license to own an air rifle?

As of 2014, neither a Firearms Identification Card (FID) nor a License to Carry (LTC) is needed to lawfully possess an air gun and ammunition. Because the weapon expels projectiles with compressed air and not an explosive projectile, they are not constituted as firearms under Federal law.

However, certain restrictions may apply, limiting the use of air guns by minors not accompanied by an adult, and limiting those without sporting or hunting licenses. Other ordinances may also be in place prohibiting use in public. Such restrictions may be learned by contacting the state Attorney General, State Police post or local law enforcement agency.
