How do you open the Windows command prompt?

To open the Windows Command Prompt window, open the Start menu, and choose All Programs. Then, choose Accessories, and click Command Prompt.

  1. Open the Start menu

    In Windows 7, Vista and XP, open the Start menu by clicking on the Start button. It is in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. In Windows 8, swipe up to show the Apps screen.

  2. Choose the All Programs option

    For Windows Vista and XP, in the Start menu, click on the All Programs option. In Windows 7, type "command" in the search box and click on Command Prompt in the results. For Windows 8, choose All Apps.

  3. Choose Accessories

    In Windows Vista and XP, click on Accessories, and choose Command Prompt. In Windows 8, find the Windows System section, and click Command Prompt.
