Dollar General Corporation owns Dollar General stores, as of 2014. The chain of more than 10,000 stores in 40 U.S. states has its headquarters in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
The stores sell generic and branded products, including closeouts and off-brand items. Since 2000, some stores carry a larger choice of groceries and use the name Dollar General Market. As of September 2014, Dollar General is attempting to purchase the chain Family Dollar Stores Inc. Dollar General opened in 1939 with the idea that no item would be priced higher than one dollar. As of 2014, however, the store is no longer a dollar store.
