Do ozone generators work?

Ozone generators are sometimes marketed as air cleaning devices, but they are relatively ineffective compared to air filters and have the potential to cause lung irritation. Those with asthma and allergies are at greatest risk of developing breathing problems due to household ozone and should choose a different air purifier.

Ozone can kill bacteria and mold and is often used in commercial cleaning and air purifying systems. However, concentrations strong enough to achieve those effects can be harmful, especially to people with pre-existing lung issues. In addition, free ozone can react with certain types of pollutants, creating even more dangerous compounds in the air.
