How does the ozone layer protect life on earth?

The ozone layer protects life on earth by acting as a shield against ultraviolet rays, which are destructive to any living organism. Ultraviolet rays are emitted by the sun, but before they reach the surface of the earth they are intercepted by the ozone layer of the atmosphere.

The ozone layer basically absorbs harmful emissions from the sun, which is why life on earth is able to thrive. No other planet known to man has conditions that can favor life, and without the ozone layer Earth would also become unable to support life. Below are some things that would happen if the ozone layer was damaged to any extent.

• Cancer: one of the things that would be frequently experienced by human beings on Earth is skin cancer. Since the layer would not be able to effectively block UV rays, human skin would most likely be endangered.
• Cataracts: this refers to a condition where human beings go blind. Almost all human beings on earth would have some sort of visual impairment without the ozone layer.
• Impaired immune systems: human bodies have self-defense mechanisms that help prevent infections and disease attacks. Without the ozone layer, the human immune system would be vulnerable, causing people to fall ill and die quickly.
