Hiccups usually go away on their own after a few minutes. Trying to breathe normally will help the diaphragm reset itself, notes WebMD.
Hiccups are caused when the diaphragm has a spasm. The hiccup sound is caused when the air hits the vocal cords. Drinking a glass of water will help the diaphragm quit spasming. A tablespoon of sugar or honey also decreases the length of time the hiccups last. Hiccups should only last a few minutes but they can last for a few hours, as stated on WebMD. Eating too fast, smoking or excess gulping of air are a few common reasons for the boy to begin hiccupping. Hiccups that last for more than 2 days should be treated by a doctor.
