To paint a brick fireplace, sand and clean the bricks and mortar. Apply a primer designed for use on bricks to the surface with a roller. After the primer dries, apply two coats of a acrylic latex paint, and let the paint cure for two weeks before using the fireplace.
- Clean the fireplace
Run sand paper over the bricks and mortar to remove loose material. Scrub the fireplace with soapy water and a stiff brush to remove dirt and soot. Rinse soap residue off with a damp sponge. After the surface dries, vacuum to remove any remaining dust.
- Apply a latex primer
Use a roller with a 1-inch nap to apply a latex primer recommended for bricks to the entire fireplace surface. Use a paintbrush to touch up areas the roller misses. Let the primer dry all the way. Apply a second coat if there are any dry areas where the primer soaked into the bricks.
- Paint the surface
Apply two coats of acrylic latex paint with a roller or a large paint brush. Let the paint dry thoroughly between coats.
- Give the paint time to cure
Let the latex paint cure for two weeks before using the fireplace or setting decor items on the mantle.
