What are the Pampas?

The Pampas are a grassland region located in South America and particularly in Argentina, though the Pampas do spread into Uruguay. "Pampas" is an Indian word meaning "level plain."

According to Blue Planet Biomes, the Pampas extend from 34 to 30 degrees south latitude and from 57 to 63 degrees west longitude. This flat, fertile region contains about 300,000 square miles and experiences a humid, warm climate. Pampas grass, a tall and decorative type of vegetation, is one of the plants native to this area. Because of the rich grazing land, many cattle ranches are found on the Pampas tended by gauchos, the native South American cowboys.
