Paramecium most commonly eat algae and bacteria. Paramecium are able to take in food through the cytostome, or a microtubule groove or funnel.
Paramecium live in fresh bodies of water such as ponds, and they are able to absorb water through osmosis. When paramecium absorb too much water, they expel the excess through their cell membranes. They reproduce by binary fission, as they can do this as often as two or three times per day. Some paramecium can also produce sexually by attaching to one another with their oral surfaces. Once the two fuse together, the partners separate and the binary fission process takes place.
