What is a parathyroid scan for?

A parathyroid scan is a medical procedure performed by a doctor to check the health and function of the parathyroid gland, explains PeaceHealth. The process involves the use of a radioactive material and a non-radioactive element to gather information from the body.
The doctor binds the radioactive material to the non-radioactive element, creating a combination called radionuclide, says PeaceHealth. This combination releases energy called photons, which allows a special camera to collect information from the body during the procedure. The scan takes about 15 minutes, and the patient does not feel any effects from the injection, which takes about 24 hours to clear from the body.
