Penguins are flightless birds native to the Southern Hemisphere. They range from Antarctica to the Galapagos Islands, which straddle the equator. Penguins eat fish, krill, squid and other small marine animals.
There are between 17 and 20 species of penguin. The largest species, the emperor penguin, is the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary titled "March of the Penguins," which follows the penguins' journeys between their inland breeding grounds and the seas on which they depend for food. Penguins are also characters in the movie "Happy Feet" and the "Madagascar" movie series. Penguins can be seen at zoos and aquariums around the world.
