What is a penny board?

A penny board is a small, lightweight-plastic skateboard that can be used to perform tricks like a wooden or vinyl skateboard, but it has larger cruising wheels like a longboard. Ben Mackay of Penny Australia created the penny board in 2010 as a throwback to his plastic board from childhood.

Plastic skateboards were first introduced in the 1970s by Larry Stevenson, but the boards did not gain much popularity with skating pros. Penny boards are widely popular and were found in 35 countries as of 2012. Both amateurs and pro riders are making use of penny boards, though the boards were not initially well-received.
