How do I perform the experiment that involves the egg going into the bottle?

If you prepare the hard-boiled egg beforehand, you can complete this demonstration in just a few minutes. This experiment requires the egg, an appropriately sized glass bottle, a sheet of paper and a match. A typical juice drink bottle has the right size opening.

1. Select the right bottle

   Choose a bottle with an opening slightly smaller than the egg. The opening should be large enough that the egg does not stick as it passes through, but small enough that the egg does not fall through on its own.

2. Prepare the egg

   Place a medium egg in a pan of simmering water. Cook the egg with the water just below the boiling point for 11 minutes. Remove the egg from the water and allow it to cool. Remove the eggshell from the egg.

3. Warm the bottle

   Set the bottle in a pan of very hot water. When it is hot, carefully remove it from the water and set it upright. Quickly place the egg on top of the bottle.

4. Watch the egg drop

   As the warm air inside the bottle begins to cool, it creates a vacuum that gently pulls the egg through the opening. The egg is elastic enough that it squeezes through the opening without breaking.
