The Ford diesel and gasoline engines perform differently in fuel efficiency and towing capacity, as of 2015. The smaller Ford EcoBoost diesel engines generate more horsepower and torque, allowing them to pull heavier loads while using less fuel than their larger gasoline powered counterparts.
The 2.7-liter diesel can tow a maximum 8,500 pounds compared with 7,600 pounds for the 3.5-liter gas model, and the diesel averaged at least one mile per gallon better in all driving conditions. Comparing the 3.5-liter diesel with the 5.0-liter gas model generates similar results, with the diesel version towing 1,100 pounds more, and having a 2 mile per gallon fuel usage superiority.
