UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery and MedicineNet include pictures of a torn meniscus on their company websites. The pictures also give additional details about the structure of the knee and the location of the meniscus.
Each knee joint in the human body contains two menisci, explains Healthline. The meniscus, which is a small piece of cartilage, provides cushioning between the tibia and femur. Since the meniscus is often torn because of a forced twist or rotation, athletes are at a higher risk for this injury.
Symptoms of a meniscus tear include pain and swelling in the knee, feeling like the knee is unable to support you, difficulty moving the knee, and feeling like the knee is locking, according to Healthline.
