The Piedmont is a plateau region that spans eight states and encompasses an area of 80,000 square miles. It stretches from New Jersey to Alabama and is further dived into two sections: the Piedmont Lowlands and the Piedmont Upland.
The name Piedmont comes from the French word meaning “foothill.†The Piedmont region in North Carolina covers half of the state and is comprised of foothills, and the Piedmont region in Virginia has an elevation of 850 feet. Georgia’s Piedmont region spans from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Upper Coastal Plain. Human migrants arrived around 8,000 B.C., but the first European was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540.
