Do pineapples grow on trees?

Pineapples do not grow on trees; pineapples are herbaceous plants that do not develop woody stems. The average height of a pineapple plant is between 2.5 and 5 feet, and its leaves spread 3 to 4 feet wide.

Pineapples are native to South America and have been cultivated in Central America and the Caribbean since pre-Columbian times. While the largest producers of pineapples are Brazil, the Philippines and Thailand, most pineapple sold commercially in North America and Europe is descended from a Hawaiian variety. In the United States, these are grown domestically in Hawaii, while European markets import pineapples grown in Costa Rica.
