No one knows how many non-fatal dog attacks occur. The American Humane Association estimates that 4.7 million dog bites occur each year in the U.S. Many are never reported. The pit bull is a favorite among owners who train and breed dogs for fighting and as guard dogs, but without such training, the pit bull is not inherently aggressive. When kept by a responsible and loving owner, the breed makes an excellent family dog.
