What is a pitfall seed used for in Animal Crossing?

In "Animal Crossing," the pitfall seed can be buried to create a pitfall trap that villagers and the player can fall into. The seed can be found in the game world once per day, and its location is randomized.

To escape a pitfall seed trap, a player must rapidly press buttons to start an escape attempt. The speed of the button press increases the player's escape speed. Villagers that fall into the trap only display a shocked dialogue and free themselves instantly after being spoken to. Certain characters in the game, such as the elderly tortoise Tortimer, are immune to the trap.
