Most steamship lines have online container/vessel tracking for ocean shipments. Track-Trace provides a master list of steamship lines' websites as well as a master search field by container number.

In order to search on Track-Trace or steamship line websites, the searcher needs to know a container number, bill of lading number or booking number to track a specific container. Some steamship lines, such as Mediterranean Shipping Company, let users track a vessel by dates of departure and arrival. Others, such as OOCL, allow searchers to query by vessel name, voyage number and port of discharge. One may also query OOCL sailing schedules by origin and destination port.
