Record players date back to Thomas Edison’s phonograph, invented in 1877. It was the first machine in the world created to record sounds for playback. It had a grooved wax cylinder that produced sound when a stylus that moved over the grooves transmitted the sounds into a horn-shaped amplifier. Emile Berliner improved on Edison’s design by trading in the more expensive wax cylinders for cheaper-to-produce flat shellac records.
