Plant an apple tree by choosing a type of apple tree, placing it in a good location, preparing the soil, digging a large hole for the root ball, planting the tree and watering the tree. You need compost, a shovel and water.
- Choose an apple tree to plant
Choose a type of apple tree that grows well in your location. Choose a disease-resistant tree if possible to limit the amount of chemicals you have to use to control pests. Besides deciding on the fruit variety you want, choose between a dwarf or full-size tree. Dwarf trees are easier to maintain, but full-size trees have more fruit-bearing years. Unless you purchase a self-pollinating tree, you need to plant two in order for the tree to bear fruit.
- Choose a good location for the tree
Choose a location to plant the tree that has full sun and loamy, well-drained soil.
- Prepare the soil
Before planting, prepare the soil by adding organic matter such as compost. If needed, amend the soil to make sure it drains well.
- Dig a hole
Dig a hole for the tree that is deep enough to comfortably fit the base of the tree and is twice as wide as the root ball.
- Plant the tree
Place the tree in the hole, and spread out the roots.
- Fill in the hole
Fill in the hole with the soil, pressing it down firmly.
- Water the plant
Water the tree thoroughly after planting it.
