How do you plant corn?

To plant corn, prepare the soil, set up a makeshift fence, make a trench for the seeds, and plant them. Water the plants often, and fertilize when the plant reaches 8 inches tall.

1. Prepare the soil

   Corn thrives in loose, nitrogen-rich soil with a pH balance between 6.0 and 7.0. Add manure, compost or fish emulsion to enrich the soil.

2. Prepare the row

   Set up stakes in a straight row to make the seedbed. Tie a string to each stake to form an aisle.

3. Create a seed furrow

   On one side of the string fence, dig a small trench 1 or 2 inches deep for the seeds. Leave a short wall of soil near the furrow to make it easier to re-cover the seeds with soil after planting.

4. Plant the seeds

   Drop the seeds in the furrow roughly 10 inches apart. Press the seeds into the soil with the back of a hoe so that the seeds make direct contact with the soil. Rake the soil back over the furrow, and firm the soil one more time. Repeat this as desired, leaving 2 to 3 feet between rows.

5. Care for the plants

   Water the corn plants on a regular basis. If the cobs swell or the leaves curl, the plants are dehydrated. Fertilize with nitrogen fertilizer when the plants reach 8 inches tall.
