How do you plant trumpet vine seeds?

Growing trumpet vines from seeds requires only a few gardening tools, compost, water and a trellis or other structure to support the vines. Trumpet vines are hardy, fast-growing perennials that adapt easily to almost any location.
- Prepare the soil
Trumpet vines prefer soil with good drainage but can grow in most kinds of dirt. Pick a location with full sun or partial shade. More sun promotes more vibrant blooms. Choose a location that's not near buildings or houses because the rapidly growing roots of the vine can cause damage to the structure. Loosen the soil with a shovel or garden fork to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Work in compost.
- Plant the seeds
Plant the seeds after the threat of frost has passed. Drop them directly into the soil, and cover with soil to a depth of 1/4 inch. Water, and keep the soil moist until the plants are well-established.
- Install a trellis
Trumpet plants must have support; the woody vines can grow up to 40 feet in one season. A trellis gives the plants the support they need. Once the seedlings are established, install a trellis near the plants. Fences or poles are good alternatives to trellises.
