Why is a plug adapter needed in Australia?
By Forinfos - 26/08/2025 - 0 comments
Electrical outlets in Australia are Type I Australian AS-3112 which have a different plug configuration than American plugs, requiring an adapter to let them fit together. Additionally, the electrical current is different in Australia. Some appliances are designed to work with both, but if not a voltage converter is required.
North American appliances are designed to operate on a voltage supply of 100 to 120 volts at 60 hertz. Australian equipment uses 220 to 240 volts and 50 hertz. The hertz rate reflects the number of cycles per second. Since the Australian current has fewer cycles even with a voltage converter, appliances from North America may operate slower than usual.
