“On Monsieur’s Departure†is a poem attributed to Elizabeth I, the queen of England and Ireland from Nov. 17, 1558, until her death on March 24, 1603. It was said that the queen wrote the poem for François, Duke of Alençon, her last suitor.
François was offered to Elizabeth as a bridegroom by his mother, Catherine de’ Medici. At first, Elizabeth was hesitant to accept the offer. She was 38 years old at the time, and the duke was only 17. The courtship dragged on for years, and the two did fall in love, but they never got married because of numerous oppositions, one of which was their different religions.
