While Michigan is home to 39 different species of spiders, the southern black widow is the only poisonous spider indigenous to the state. The other 38 species of spider native to Michigan are not poisonous. Only three types of venomous spiders live in the United States.
The female black widow is entirely black, with the exception of a red area on its abdomen in the shape of an hourglass. Black widows tend to hide during the day, but they may be visible in their webs at night. The other two species of venomous spiders indigenous to the United States are the brown recluse and the hobo spider.
