A positive integer is a whole number greater than zero, and a negative integer is a whole number less than zero. Whole numbers are numbers without any fractions or decimals. These numbers are also called counting numbers.
Positive and negative integers have many uses in real life. The negative integer -16 may be used to describe a loss of $16 or 16 pounds. The positive integer +5 might be used to refer to a gain of 5 pounds. These numbers are also used with temperatures. The positive integer +32 is another way to say it is 32 degrees above zero, while the negative integer -3 is used to say it is three degrees below zero.
