Occult blood in a urinalysis may signal a urinary infection, kidney or bladder stones, kidney trauma or a prostate infection, according to the Urology Care Foundation. Blood in urine could also result from a tough workout, blood thinning drugs or anti-swelling drugs.

Occult blood in urine may indicate an enlarged prostate in older men, or bladder cancer, especially in smokers, claims the Urology Care Foundation. It may also result from menstruation. About 2 or 3 percent of people with microscopic blood in their urine have urological cancers. Occult blood in urine is less likely than visible blood to be associated with cancer or a major health issue.
