For most retailers, gift cards are nonrefundable. Some retailers do offer refunds under certain conditions such as that the card has not been used at all or was purchased within a certain time frame. Each individual retailer needs to be consulted about their refund policies.

Even if a retailer does not offer refunds, there are options for exchanging or cashing in on a gift card. Certain websites exist where individuals can exchange unwanted gift cards for gift cards from more desirable retailers. Sometimes, gift cards can be sold for close to face value. These exchanges are private transactions between individuals and do not have anything to do with each retailer's policies about gift cards.
