Is it possible to scan negatives to your personal computer?

It is possible to scan photographic negatives to a personal computer by using a film-capable scanner. Such scanners usually have a special holder that keeps the negative in place.
Scanning a negative requires inverting the image. This is a straightforward process when scanning black and white negatives, but color negatives require more changes. When a color image is inverted, it leaves behind an orange mask that must be balanced out. Film scanners have a negative mode to do this balancing. Since different film brands produce different types of orange masks, film-capable scanners also have settings for different types of film.
