A probationary period is a trial period at the start of a person's employment with an organization. The point of a probationary period is to allow the company's hiring manager time to determine whether the new hire is a good fit for the business.
The length of a probationary period varies by company and position. For some entry-level positions, the trial may last for just 30 to 90 days. Professional and technical staff probationary periods often last three months. Some administrative, research and supervisor jobs include a probationary period of six months. The termination process is typically more elaborate after a probationary period ends.
